One of the main difficulties in dealing
with Colonial Audit Department transfers and
promotions in the past has been the existence in West
Africa of one continuous "long scale" rising (subject
to the passing of efficiency bars) from £400 or £450
to £920 for Assistant Auditors (Class IV of the
Colonial Audit Department Service), whereas in East
Africa and in other Colonies there were two grades :
(a) Assistant Auditor on a scale rising (in East
Africa) to £720 (Class IV) and
(b) a Senior Assistant Auditor grade, which was in
Class III of the Colonial Audit Department Service
and was filled by promotion from Class IV.
5. The recent regrading of West African scales,
by which the "long scale" for Assistant Auditors has
been replaced by two grades :
Senior Assistant Auditors on £840
Assistant Auditors
remove this difficulty.

It would be regrettable if
the difficulty were to be perpetuated by its being
introduced into the Hong Kong grading. The Hong Kong
grading has hitherto been anomalous, for it has
provided for two grades of Assistant Auditor, one grade
corresponding in scale of salary to Assistant
Auditors of other Colonies, and a higher grade largely
corresponding in fact, though not in name, with
Senior Assistant Auditors of other Colonies. Both
grades, the title of both being Assistant Auditor,
